Ban on halal and kosher slaughter methods comes into force in Belgium 

 

A ban involving ritual animal slaughter has come into force in a region of Belgium. Halal and kosher ways of killing is now illegal in Flanders after the ban was imposed on New Years Day despite significant opposition. The bill bans both halal slaughter and Jewish shechita slaughter – where conscious animals have their throats slit.

Following the ban, European Jewish Congress president Moshe Kantor said: ‘It attacks the very core of our culture and religious practice and our status as equal citizens with equal rights in a democratic society. ‘We call on legislators to step back from the brink of the greatest assault on Jewish religious rights in Belgium since the Nazi occupation of the country in World War Two.’

There have been claims that the ban represents antisemitism and Islamophobia. However, animal rights groups say that the kosher and halal rituals are inhumane. Animals will now have to be electronically stunned before they can be killed. The ban will also be extended to Wallonia in southern Belgium from September. Read more
